King’s InterHigh is considered the 'original online school', offering high quality live and recorded lessons to students around the world. The school’s community is home to 5,500 students aged 7-19 all thriving with innovative learning, including those who may have struggled in traditional schools (for example, due to anxiety), young people with barriers to learning (such as special educational needs), and learners who need a flexible education — like actors, athletes, and entrepreneurs. King’s InterHigh uses a proven educational model “to engage students to reach a success level they have never imagined.”

King’s InterHigh has now been using Book Creator regularly for over a year. We met with Anthony Peters, Head of Educational Technology, to discuss how the school has been successfully using the platform.

Using technology, we can enhance both engagement and attainment of students so that we do not just match the physical school environment but surpass it.

Overcoming challenges

A potential challenge with any school is student engagement and participation. As the UK’s leading online school, we utilise only the best versatile technology to foster a love of learning at King’s InterHigh.

Historically, as with any form of education, there has been a risk that if lessons are not exciting and challenging enough, students could become passive observers instead of active participants. Differentiating to students' needs and making resources accessible are two additional challenges that all schools face, online or otherwise. Teachers must ensure that all students (including those with additional learning needs or differing preferred learning styles) can maintain the pace of understanding and absorb as much knowledge as their classmates.

Book Creator is one of the many tools we use at King’s InterHigh to alleviate these problems and create the best possible learning experience.

This has led to many exciting projects that we run concurrently in every week of our academic year. Book Creator is incredibly easy to use which is essential for our learners as we range from Year 3 all the way up to Year 13 (all of whom enjoy using the platform).

Having used Book Creator for years, personally, I was not surprised with how well the tool worked. However, what did surprise me was the sheer speed at which our excellent staff followed suit.

Implementing Book Creator at King's InterHigh

King’s InterHigh initially embarked on a three-month trial period for Book Creator, using it in subjects like Geography, English, and Science. The Learning Innovation Department provided training and support to help teachers make the most of this new tool, encouraging creative use and engagement. Teachers also pursued certifications, which further equipped them to integrate Book Creator effectively into lessons.

How to become a Book Creator Certified Author

The success of the trial spread quickly, and Book Creator was praised for being an invaluable tool that enhanced the teaching experience. As a result, the school decided to purchase a full license for the upcoming academic year. The process was straightforward due to several initiatives implemented to streamline adoption.

Overall, Book Creator proved to be a transformative addition to the school’s toolkit, empowering teachers to deliver more interactive and creative lessons. This led to a seamless transition from trial use to full implementation, ensuring that the platform would continue to benefit students and teachers alike.

Following an initial small-scale run, it became evident that Book Creator would be an incredibly valuable tool for our students. Early adoption was high among our teachers, and I ensured they were provided with comprehensive guidance on how Book Creator could be used to enhance our students’ learning experience.

Armed also with resources and training direct from Book Creator, our educators enthusiastically embraced Book Creator into their lessons. Going forward, we have continued to facilitate this with ongoing initiatives that encourage use of the tool across various subjects and year groups.

Having used Book Creator for years, personally, I was not surprised with how well the tool worked. However, what did surprise me was the sheer speed at which our excellent staff followed suit – a credit to the highly organised, creative, and efficient calibre of teaching we have at King’s InterHigh.

The importance of community and continuous learning

The different levels of Book Creator certification are a terrific asset as they have encouraged many of our teachers to improve their Book Creator knowledge and the power of collaboration. I am delighted to have seen some of our staff even gain admittance to the Book Creator Ambassador tier – the most inspiring network of like-minded educators.

Diverse use cases across subjects

Now, Book Creator is being used across all subjects in all key stages and year groups from Year 3 to Year 13. We have not been prescriptive in how it is to be used, as we encourage educator imagination, not stifle it. One-third of King’s InterHigh staff have Master’s or PhDs in their subject specialisms, so how they use it to enhance learning is up to them, and we have seen teachers employ their expertise to devise a wide variety of use cases!

Kings InterHigh Library of teacher books

The school has implemented various interactive projects and resources to enhance student learning. For science, students are engaged in whole-term investigations, conducting simple home experiments with parental guidance and recording their findings in creative ways. In preparation for exams, the school provides interactive revision guides that include video explanations, voice notes, and quizzes. During summer, revision booklets with AI-powered personalised learning, animations, and self-marking quizzes proved popular among students, with over 2000 participants.

Additionally, the school runs large-scale projects, such as a Food Festival recipe book where students contributed by sharing recipes and videos of their cooking from around the world. The Year 3 art project used digital tools like paint software and voice notes, and an ongoing English project uses Book Creator and virtual reality to develop descriptive writing skills. The school has also focused on staff recruitment, both internally and externally, to support these initiatives.

How has Book Creator improved learning at King's InterHigh?

Transformative student engagement

As mentioned above, Book Creator has significantly increased student engagement across all key stages and subjects across the school. The functionality has led to some incredible projects from teachers and opened up new avenues for international collaboration between the other schools.

Streamlined student workflow

In addition to this, there was an increased need for students to exemplify their learning through student portfolios in a more exciting way.

Before Book Creator, students were using a range of different software to showcase their work, which wasn’t as inspiring or effective as it could have been for both students and teachers alike. Book Creator redefined the way we streamline student workflow in incredible ways.

Book Creator has been another great way for us to increase student engagement. Not only are teachers able to facilitate more inspiring group projects, but our students have also been able to exemplify their own learning in new and exciting ways. This has been particularly valuable to the many students who have joined King’s InterHigh to rebuild their love for learning after difficulties in mainstream education.

Personalized feedback and collaboration

The multimodal nature of Book Creator has been a great way for students to exemplify their understanding of concepts – for their own reference and review, as part of classroom collaboration, and to show their teachers what they know. Likewise, teachers are also able to use Book Creator to feed in input on students’ work.

Key features and benefits

Book Creator is incredibly fun and engaging with bright colours, assorted shapes, animated emojis and pre-made templates, which allow students to personalise their own books. With the addition of multimedia input, Book Creator empowers students to unlock their imaginations and align them perfectly with their academic work.

This multimodal toolset, as well as being enormously fun(!), also enables learners with barriers such as anxiety or speaking English as a second language to exemplify their understanding of concepts in a way they feel confident to do so whether that's via microphone, video link, text, or drawings.

Data-driven insights and continuous improvement

As well as the great anecdotal results we’ve seen and mentioned above, we also use data to inform best practice and to determine the efficacy of the exciting and imaginative projects we create - both in terms of student engagement and academic rigour.
