Memorable moments and visual elements
One of my most memorable and impactful experiences with Book Creator was using it to teach te reo Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand and one of the country's three official languages, alongside English and New Zealand Sign Language.
In New Zealand, it is customary to introduce ourselves during gatherings through a mihimihi—a structured, culturally significant introduction that acknowledges our ancestry, heritage, and place of belonging.
Using Book Creator, I guided my students through the process of crafting their mihimihi, starting with learning the traditional structure and appropriate use of te reo Māori phrases. The platform's user-friendly interface allowed students to create a digital version of their mihimihi, incorporating voice recordings, images, and text. This multimodal approach catered to diverse learning styles and provided a safe space for students to practice their pronunciation and refine their introductions.

The voice recording feature was particularly powerful—it gave students the opportunity to speak their mihimihi aloud, hear themselves, and build confidence in using te reo Māori. For many students, this was their first experience speaking the language in a meaningful context. The ability to play back and share their recordings helped them develop a deeper connection to their identity and heritage, while also fostering a sense of pride in their cultural roots.
Once completed, students presented their digital mihimihi to the class and, in some cases, to the wider school community during cultural events. This experience not only reinforced their learning but also strengthened their sense of belonging within the school environment. It encouraged them to see their culture as something to be celebrated and shared.
